Hey,

just curious: who has a (maybe not so regular) group?

Unfortunately i am out of a group. I used to be GM most of the time. But
now i am out of time, out of players (moved to a new place) and so out
of roleplaying. At least board games are played regularly. Settlers of
Catan it is for me. And KODT the only fix of roleplaying i get right
now.. :-(

what about you?

Well, my GURPS group broke up as people moved away (I was commuting 100
miles each week for a while, but finally had to give it up).

However, I have moved back to my town, as has another member of our
original group. Actually, what brought us all back to playing was D&D
4th ed, which we are playing now, monthly.

What has really happened in the interim between the weekly games and now
is that kids born, houses bought, wives married, real jobs, etc etc. So
now we get together only once a month (if that), and none of us have the
ability/time to put together a game. For D&D, we are using a canned
module. I wish there was more of that for GURPS - any suggestions?

best -

the topic of canned modules has seen some discussion here. i miss them,
too. unfortunately i have not seen many home made modules around the
internet.

I do!
Our group consists of a number of former AD&D players that got tired of
the rules wars that had developed and swapped to GURPS in 1983.
I became the Primary GM although several others have GMed over the
years. At one point we had 15 Players, but time and Life have depleted
the ranks. Currently there are Me (Roger) soon to be 60 (I'm teased
about being around when the Earth was still soft), primary GM of 3
fantasy campaigns set in a modified Khedris/Lantara from the Basic
"Caravan to En Arris" scenario, and I'm currently working on designing a
Space campaign based upon the Barrayar/Vorkosigan novels.

The other major GM is Vance, who is actually the person that's been
playing RPGs the longest. He's about 45 now, and has been playing since
he was about 12. He's running a X-files/semi-horror modern day campaign,
and a medieval fantasy campaign in alternation with my efforts.

Ogre (late 30s?) is also a GM, but unfortunately, is only playing
alternate weekends at best, and recently hasn't been able to participate
at all. His campaign is a fantasy one also set in Khedris/Lantara. He's
also working on a 1870's Western campaign.

Mike is the other Ancient of Days (2 years my junior), and although DMed
for a while in AD&D, has only been a Player in our GURPS campaigns.

Harley (late 20's) has GMed in the past, but just recently rejoined us
as is just a Player for now.

Deb, (also Mid 20's) has just begun playing GURPS, and is the most
recent addition to the group.

In addition, there are my nephew, Mike (21), who occasionally plays
between college activities, Sovereign Phil(late 20s) - a periodic
wanderer across our gamescapes, and perhaps rejoining us this next week
will be a couple who took a few years off to get married, and somewhat
more settled, who are also in their late 20s).

We attempt to play every Saturday beginning about 7:30 and often going
to 3-4 am Sunday morning. January, so far, has tossed a few kinks into
the schedule. We're located outside of Chapel Hill, NC.

Here's to GOOD Gaming!
Roger

man, i really envy you. This sounds like gaming heaven. A group of
players of all ages, coming together regularly and enjoying the game.
And lots of campaigns running.. great! where do you take the time for
preparation?
Its some time-stop spell, right?

Actually, Both Vance and I are pretty good about extemporaneously
creating sub plots and minor offshoots to the mainline campaign that
covers the spots between periodic plot design in greater detail. And, as
I love detail, this usually means that I think about things while I have
spare moments -at lunch, driving between pickups, riding the bus, etc.
Plus, I try to reserve a few hours on either Saturday afternoon or
Sunday to play catch up between game sessions.

Also, having 2 off-the-top-of-the-head GMs means that one of us is
usually ready to run, even in the situations where the 3rd GM was
supposed to be ready. And we alternate campaigns pretty well.

Don't know about it being the Greatest - there are a few others I like
quite as well, but I am quite fond of GURPS gaming.

Hello,
I’m looking for players for a tabletop and online GURPS Space roleplaying game. All of the player characters are secret agents. We’re playing in Alhambra, CA., near L.A. I am also running the game online. We can teach you the system. It’s easy!

If you’re interested, please email me. Email me for character creation. I have 4 pregenerated characters, including a telepath.

If you’re interested, please email me.

I am also running the adventure online — just one move per day.

I haven't had a live regular group since 1995 or so. I;ve run three
online campaigns since 2003 -- the five players I have now are
completely different from the five I started with (of the five current
players, three are common to both current campaigns).

Chat room. This means a 4 hour online session gets about as much done
as 1.5 to 2 hours at s table.

I've been gaming with the same 4 people for about 15 years now.
Before that, my previous gaming group of about 8 ran for 5 years.

I've pretty much had a constant group of two friends play weekly since 1988
(although the ranks have periodically swelled and shrunk over the years). In
that time we've played Battletech, Star Trek, Wild Cards, Ghostbusters, Conan,
Cliffhangers, Villains and Vigilantes (more than 1 campaign of that), D&D,
Cyberpunk 2020, plus a few campaigns that never really took off (like Champions
and Xanth).

Over the years we've had lulls were we couldn't meet for weeks (or months) at a
time, but we always seem to get back on track.

Two or three times a year, a big group of us get together for a big D&D game
that turns into a sleep-over when we can't stay awake any longer, and once a
year a bigger group of us go north to a cottage and game for a three or four day
weekend (D&D, Risk, Axis and Allies - you name it.)

If I had to stop gaming I'd go nuts. Luckily my kids like to play RPGs too, so I
have another generation to GM.

Unfortunately this great tradition slowed down here. We used to do this
once or twice a year, but not for the last couple of years. It was
really a highlight. Best days of the year i guess :-)

ok, you have posted some detailed information, thanks, a very
interesting read. I would like to add a few details about my own life as
a gamer.
I started back in 1989 when i was 13. I played most of my spare time
with a group of friends unti 1995. We were a slightly changing group of
7-10 people. Though occasions when there were more than 6 players were
rare, which was a good thing because things got a little slow.

My first game was with Star Wars. The old version from West end games i
think. We played lots of systems, though AD&D 2nd and Gurps (3rd) became
the most regular. I used to GM both systems, sometimes i was a player in
AD&D (Dragonlance and Dark Sun), i GMed Forgotten REalms. And sometimes
we had a cool campaign run by a friend of mine of Gurps fantasy.

In 1995 however people left town. Went to different universities. Our
old group dissolved. Sadly we never played with all of the guys
together. I even heard that one of them sold all his old rpg stuff on
ebay and quit gaming completely. sad loss.

New friends came on campus and some old joined in. While having a more
or less regular group (of AD&D), we had our annual meetings when some of
the old guys came and we gamed a whole weekend.

Sadly i had to move again and again due to job offers and now i havent
had a regular group since 2002. Boy, thats 7 years now! unbelievable!

Sometimes we still had Gurps one-shot adventures, but nothing for the
last 3 years (despite some hopeless effort of launching a campaign here,
but the guys were not really into it.).

Thats it.

Mine is not so regular, because of the familiar commitment problems.

Getting people to choose a common date and time for a *one-off*
occasion for anything is a major headache these days. Factor in that
you're asking them also to *all* be there together or risk
disappointing the rest, *and* to commit to do the same thing several
times in the future? Nightmare.

“I just wish I had the time!” “Dude, you watch *how many* hours of
brain-numbing television a week? You don't even *like* half the shows
you watch, and you could record anything so important you don't want
to miss it. Maybe you could find some time there.” “Oh but I'm so
tired in the evenings, it's all I can do to vegetate in front of the
screen.” It's like talking to an addict; they confuse cause and effect
in the symptoms of their malaise.

Yet they've played several times, and are eager to do so again. We
even have a six-session (non-GURPS) game scheduled to run, and
everyone is looking forward to it. So I guess I do have a group.
